The knee joint is made of the knee cap and the lower part of the femur bone. They form a ball-and-socket type joint that allows for flexibility, strength and ease of motion. The femur, or thighbone, is the ball and the tibia, or shinbone, is the socket. Knees are important because they are one of the joints that help us to stand up tall all day long. They also help us to run.

The knee-joint attaches our legs to our lower body. It’s a strong hinge-like joint that enables us to bend and straighten our knees while walking and running as well as other activities like sitting down on a chair with your knees apart.

The knee joint is the largest joint in the body, and as a result, it can be prone to pain. There are different factors involve in knee pain when walking downstairs.

-Injury

-Arthritis

-Weakness in the muscles around the knee joint

You can easily prevent stair pain by exercising your quad and calf muscles. Doing so will take the pressure off of your knees and hips and allow you to move up and down stairs with ease. One way to do this is by doing calf raises on the stair as you are going up. You can also do squats as you go up or down stairs, but be careful not to lean too far forward or backward.

The most common cause of knee pain from walking down the stairs is iliotibial band syndrome. Iliotibial band syndrome is a condition that happens when the iliotibial band rubs against the bony protrusion on the outside of your knee.

The symptoms often include pain and swelling on the outside of the knee, and it can be worsened by walking down stairs or sitting for long periods of time.

Knee pain may be caused by many factors, including tight hips, weak core muscles, and overuse of the knee joint.

You can also try ice or heat therapy on your knee joints and take anti-inflammatory medication if necessary.

If it turns out that your pain is due to tight hips or weak core muscles, then you should work on these areas before returning any strenuous activities. You can do this by doing exercises like squats and lunges as well as yoga poses like downward dog and warrior pose.
